It is unlikely that you have not heard of Tweetdeck. If you are not using it, you can download it here.
For those who do not know what Tweetdeck is, let me explain it the way Wikipedia explains it -
TweetDeck is an Adobe AIR desktop Twitter application. Like other Twitter applications it interfaces with the Twitter API to allow users to send and receive tweets and view profiles. It is the most popular Twitter application with a 19% market share as of June 2009, following only the official Twitter.com website with 45.70% share for posting new status updates. It is compatible with Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X, with possible manual installation to GNU/Linux.
This explanation is quite comprehensive in itself but doesn’t explain the features of the application.
I use Tweetdeck for most of my tweets. Whenever I use Twitter, I use it through Tweetdeck. I keep a track of all direct messages through Tweetdeck. I reply to all my DMs through Tweetdeck. I track my friends at Facebook also through Tweetdeck.
You might be wondering as to what is it that I am writing about.
Okay, Let me now tell you why you should use Tweetdeck and what is Tweetdeck.
What is Tweetdeck?
In almost all of my posts I have mentioned about the amazing API of Twitter which is helping people develop thoosands of applications around Twitter, taht helps enhance and facilitate the usage of Twitter.
Tweetdeck is one such desktop application that helps you manage all you Twitter activities from the desktop of your computer. A very simple to install application, Tweetdeck is a powerful tool that lets you do everything from tweeting, to maintaining direct messages, replying to DMs, checking out what your friends are saying, keeping a track of what is “HOT” on Twitter and many more. It even lets you keep a track of activities at Facebook.
Why should you use Tweetdeck?
Here are 4 very meaningful reasons for using Tweetdeck. You might have many more such reasons. Don’t forget to mention those in the comments below.
Tweeting – Let me assume you have about 5,000 odd followers and you are following about 1,000 people. Just calculate the number of tweets that you will be receiving every second from these followers and the people you are following. Will you be able to keep a track of these tweets?
You will only be able to harness the power of Twitter, if you read these tweets to find if there is anything that is of value to you – probably a topic to blog about, or a product that you can sell.
With your busy schedules, it becomes virtually impossible to read every tweet coming your way. You cannot be spending the entire day at Twitter. Then how will your use Twitter?
Tweetdeck is the answer to this. It helps you read important tweets that you receive and the setting in the application helps you decide how many you want to keep.
Remain updated - Twitter is said be as powerful as Google today. If you are a consistent user of Twitter, you will be able to see what are the topics that people are searching about, and what topic is the hottest scoop. But time-constraints and the limited technology at Twitter will not help you do that exhaustively.
Tweetdeck help you in this problem. You can keep a track of everything that is “buzzing at the moment” at Tweetdeck. Keep a watch to see if there is something noteworthy to you and you might end up with a niche worth exploring.
Searching – Why do you use Twitter? What is you interest at Twitter? Whatever that might be, Twitter comes in handy only if it makes you aware of everything that is happening in your area of interest. Twitter indeed does that. But do you have the time to be at Twitter always?
Perhaps, not! So let Tweetdeck help you keep a track of everything that is happening in your area of interest. Set a search parameter in Tweetdeck and everything that is being discussed about the topic will be there on your desktop.
Missing your friends? – Are you on Facebook? If not, then you are loosing something. Facebook is where friends hang out. It is a social networking site that is the “talk of the town” today.
Another social networking site? Another application to maintain?
No, Tweetdeck integrates facebook also into it and helps you keep a track of every activity from your friend at Facebook. So you do not need to simultaneously browse through Twitter and Facebook the whole day to keep yourselves updated.
All you need is Tweetdeck.
In addition to this there are many other advantages of using Tweetdeck. I can manage all my direct messages, directly through Tweetdeck and feel this is another very important advantage of using Tweetdeck.
